What is Wellbeing?

Summarise

A Compassionate, Trauma-Informed Perspective on Mental Health

When we talk about mental health and wellbeing, it is often described as feeling calm, happy, or “doing well.” But in reality, wellbeing is not about the absence of distress it is about how we relate to ourselves and our experiences, especially during more difficult moments.

At Finding Joy Psychological Services, we provide therapy in Bedfordshire and online across the UK and abroad, supporting individuals to develop greater clarity, connection, and resilience.

We understand wellbeing as something deeper: The ability to find clarity, connection, and support, even in the presence of discomfort or uncertainty.

Wellbeing is the Capacity to Sit with Discomfort

Life inevitably brings moments of challenge whether that is anxiety, grief, trauma, chronic health conditions, or simply periods where things feel overwhelming.

Wellbeing does not mean these experiences disappear.

Instead, it’s about gently developing the ability to be with these moments, and to find ways of navigating back toward a sense of calm and connection.

We all experience times of overwhelm, and at times we may feel disconnected or shut down these are natural nervous system responses, not signs of failure.

Over time, with the right psychological support, we can begin to:

•      Notice when we are feeling overwhelmed

•      Respond with greater understanding and compassion         toward ourselves

•      Find ways to regulate and return to a steadier place

The Role of Relationships in Wellbeing

Wellbeing is not something we build entirely on our own.

As human beings, we are wired for connection. Our emotional wellbeing and mental health are shaped within our relationships.

Having someone you trust whether that’s a friend, partner, or therapist can make a meaningful difference in how distress is experienced.

Sometimes, it’s not about finding solutions. It’s about feeling less alone.

Why We Need Others: A Nervous System Perspective

From a psychological and neuroscience perspective, we are not designed to regulate ourselves in isolation.

When distress is high, our nervous system may move into states of anxiety, overwhelm, or shutdown. These responses are natural and protective.

In the presence of a safe and supportive relationship, our nervous system can begin to settle a process known as co-regulation. This is literally where one persons calm state helps soothe another’s heightened nervous system.

This is one of the reasons why therapy can be so effective for anxiety, trauma, and emotional wellbeing.
