Making Sense of Exhaustion, Brain Fog and Feeling Disconnected

By Christina Jassi

"I have so much to be grateful for… so why do I feel like this?"

It’s one of the questions I hear often in therapy.

People don’t usually arrive saying they have burnout. Instead they tell me they don’t recognise themselves anymore. They’re exhausted all the time, struggling to concentrate, snapping at the people they love and wondering what has happened to them.

Many quietly ask, ‘What’s wrong with me?’

If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, I’d like you to know something before we go any further.

You’re not alone.

And perhaps even more importantly… there may be far more right with you than you realise.

Before We Try to Fix Anything…

Can we do something different?

Instead of immediately asking ‘How do I stop feeling like this?’, what if we first became curious enough to ask ‘Why might I be feeling this way?’

At Finding Joy Psychology, we believe understanding comes before change.

Does Any of This Feel Familiar?

Exhausted, even after sleeping?

Living with brain fog?

Feeling emotionally flat or disconnected?

Becoming overwhelmed by things that never used to bother you?

Snapping at the people you love most?

Struggling to enjoy things you once looked forward to?

Wondering where the old version of yourself has gone?

If so, your experience is more common than you might think.

A Story I See Time and Time Again

One person I worked with described feeling as though they were ‘running a marathon every day before the day had even properly started.’ From the outside, life looked successful, but every conversation required effort, busy environments became exhausting and by the end of the day they had nothing left.

As we explored their experience together, we discovered something different. Their body had been working incredibly hard for a very long time.

The Problem Is not That You’re Weak

Many of the people I meet have spent years caring for others, or having to the responsible one, or self-sufficient, driving, pushing themselves to do their best. Holding everything together, pushing through and ignoring the signals their body has been sending. Eventually something changes not because they have become weaker, but because they have been strong for too long without enough opportunity to recover.

There Is More Right With You Than You Realise

Our minds and bodies are remarkable. They constantly work behind the scenes to help us survive. When life asks too much of us for too long, those protective systems can begin working overtime. You may notice difficulty concentrating, emotional numbness, irritability, exhaustion, loss of motivation or struggling to relax. These are often understandable responses to prolonged stress rather than evidence that something is fundamentally wrong with you.

Everyone’s Story Is Different

Some people have spent years adapting themselves to fit into environments that never quite felt comfortable. Some have always been the strong one. Some are carers, live with long-term health conditions, have experienced trauma or discrimination, or have simply been meeting impossible expectations. Understanding starts with your observing experience, holding still enough just to notice.

Introducing the Finding Joy Resilience Flower

At Finding Joy Psychology we think about resilience as a flower. At the centre is you. Around you are six interconnected petals:

Body

Mind

Connection

Purpose

Joy

Growth

The flower is not there to tell us what’s wrong. It’s there to help us understand where we might need a little more care.

One Gentle Reflection

Pause for a moment and ask yourself:

‘Which part of this article felt most like my experience?’

Hold your answer gently. Awareness is often the beginning of change.

You Are Not Broken

If there is one thing I hope you remember after reading this article, it is this:

There is more right with you than you realise.

The exhaustion you’re experiencing isn’t a sign you’ve failed. Your mind and body may simply be asking for something they haven’t received for a very long time. Understanding isn’t the end of the journey it’s the beginning.
