What Happens in Your First Therapy Session?

By Christina Jassi

"I am thinking about booking therapy... but I have no idea what to expect."

If you have never been to psychotherapy before, it is completely normal to feel nervous or unsure. Many people worry they will not know what to say, that they will be judged, or that they will be expected to talk about painful experiences before they feel ready.

The truth is, your first session is not about having all the answers. It is about beginning a conversation.

It is About Getting to Know You

At Finding Joy Psychology, your first session is about understanding you as a whole person not just the difficulties that brought you to therapy. We will explore what has been happening recently, what is important to you, your strengths, and what you hope life might look like if things felt different.

You Set the Pace

You never have to share more than you feel ready to. Therapy works best when there is trust, and trust takes time. Our role is not to push you into difficult conversations but to create a safe space where those conversations can happen when the time feels right.

Understanding Before Change

Many people expect to leave the first session with some of the answers. More often, they leave with something just as valuable: a clearer understanding of themselves.

Together we begin to notice patterns, explore what may have shaped them and develop a shared understanding of what is keeping you stuck. This understanding becomes the foundation for meaningful, lasting change.

Will I Be Given Homework?

Sometimes, but not always. Therapy is not about completing worksheets for the sake of it. Any ideas, exercises or reflections are chosen together because they are relevant to your goals and fit your life.

What Happens Next?

Before the session ends, we will reflect on what has been most important, discuss possible next steps and agree a plan together. Some people decide that a few focused sessions are enough. Others benefit from longer-term support. The journey is personalised to you.

Introducing the Finding Joy Resilience Flower

At Finding Joy Psychology we think about resilience as a flower. At the centre is you. Around you are six interconnected petals:

Body

Mind

Connection

Purpose

Joy

Growth

The flower is not there to tell us what’s wrong. It’s there to help us understand where we might need a little more care.

One Gentle Reflection

Instead of asking yourself:

‘What if I don’t know what to say?’

Perhaps ask:

‘What might become possible if someone took the time to truly understand me?’

Before You Go…

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, but you do not have to take it perfectly. You simply have to begin.

If you are considering therapy and would like to ask a few questions first, our complimentary initial consultation offers a friendly, no-pressure opportunity to explore your options and decide what feels right for you.
